Kate On: The People of Uganda

September 24, 2007

Kate Turner, a PA (physician’s assistant) recently returned from Restoration Gateway, and here is an excerpt from her journal on “The People of Uganda:”

What have I learned about and from the people?

I have learned that they are kind and warm. I have seen how they are flourishing in a loving, Jesus-filled environment. They are strong – to the point that I wonder if they ever allow themselves to grieve. Many of them have lost parents, children and siblings to the LRA, diseases or accidents. They have been forced to grow up quickly. I feel there are many deep wounds and pains that they have never fully felt or allowed Jesus to heal because life has forced them to be strong and move on. I wonder if the women know how beautiful they are. I wonder if the men know or realize that the higher calling/standard on their lives does not lead to a deprived life but rather an abundant one.

Poverty and pain are a part of everyday life and yet joy abounds. I believe restoration is coming because Jesus is here.

Kate On: Medicine and Uganda

September 24, 2007

Kate Turner, a PA (physician’s assistant) recently returned from Restoration Gateway, and here is an excerpt from her journal on her experience with
“Medicine and Uganda:”

If I wasn’t confident before, I am confident now – that our God truly is the Great Physician. We are taught in school that if we order this test, or prescribe this medication, or perform this procedure, a patient will be taken care of and frequently recover. So what happens when those tests, medications, and procedures are not available or affordable?

Flood-hit Uganda declares emergency

KAMPALA (AFP) - Uganda declared a state of emergency Thursday across several northern and eastern regions worst-hit by rains and floods that have affected an estimated 1.5 million people across Africa since August.

Last week the Ugandan government said 18 people had died due to the flooding and some 400,000 people were in need of assistance after being driven from their homes by the fast-rising waters or losing their livelihoods.

The situation has since worsened with more rain, helping the floods destroy houses and bridges, force whole refugee camps to be evacuated and render millions more dollars worth of crops valueless.

“A declaration for a state of emergency has been made,” Tarsis Kabwegyere, Uganda’s minister for disaster preparedness and relief, told AFP.
